Curling Iron FAQ
Q: Can a curling iron be used every day without damaging the hair? A: Yes. A curling iron can be used daily on hair without damage as long as you condition hair daily and use styling products which provide thermal protection, such as L'Oreal Nature's Therapy Heat Control Leave-In Protection Creme.
Q: Are curling irons available with different types of coatings? What is the best type to prevent damage to hair? A: There are several different types of coatings. Chrome-plated irons are the most common, and can be used on all hair types. For thin, fine hair, use on low heat. For medium to coarse hair, use on high. Gold-plated barrels are used on professional curling irons because the gold-plating conducts the heat better, offering higher heat capabilities which most professional stylists require. They are best used on medium to coarse hair. The newest coating used on both curling and straightening irons is ceramic. Ceramic coated plates help to distribute heat more evenly without creating "hot spots." Ceramic irons are great for use on all hair types and are both effective and less damaging.
Q: Which is more damaging to the hair, a curling iron or electric rollers? A: Neither is more damaging to hair when used properly. Don't over-use heated appliances and always follow the manufacturer's instructions. Before styling, apply a leave-in conditioner to help protect hair from heat damage.
Q: If your hair is not completely dry when you use a curling iron, will it burn your hair? A: A curling iron should only be used on completely dry hair because the steam created by the excess moisture combined with the heat from the iron can cause scalp burns. Never use a hot curling iron at roots or scalp.
Q: Will it burn out my curling iron if I leave it plugged in all day by accident? A: If it happens only once in a while, the iron should not be damaged. However, to do so continuously risks shortening the life of the iron. Professional curling iron heaters last five times longer than the standard curling iron heater. As a safety measure, and to prevent any possibility of fire hazard, unplug your curling iron after use.
Q: I have naturally curly hair that is always out of control. Is there a curling iron available that will smooth and control my curls without leaving it frizzy? A: A large barrel professional curling iron that reaches a higher temperature is best for curly or frizzy hair. Try a 1" barrel for light curl or a larger 1 1/4" or 1 1/2" for super smooth hair. The Gold 'N Hot Curling Irons have a rheostat temperature control ranging from 145 to 320 degrees.
Q: How can I prevent burning myself when using one of the professional multi-temperature curling irons? A: Practice using your iron at lower heat settings before using higher and hotter settings. When curling hair on these high settings, keep the iron away from the scalp, facial area or other body parts. Do not touch the barrel with your fingers—ouch!
