Types of Hair Perm

Salon Perms Salon perms will always do a better job and are a lot safer .Also professional hairdressers can offer a number of different types of perm that are not available for home use.

Acid perms

Produce highly conditioned, flexible curls. They are ideally suited to hair that is fine, sensitive, fragile, damaged, or tinted, as they have a mildly acidic action that minimizes the risk of hair damage.

Alkaline perms

Alkaline perms give strong, firm curl results on normal and resistant hair.

Exothermic perms

Exothermic perms give bouncy, resilient curls. "Exothermic" refers to the gentle heat that is produced by the chemical reaction that occurs when the lotion is mixed. The heat allows the lotion to penetrate the hair cuticle, conditioning and strengthening the hair from inside as the lotion moulds the hair into its new shape.

Hi,
I have been coloring my hair for 4 years. My hair is thick, and medium length. I love thick volume curls. Will a perm ruin my hair? Will my hair take it? Will it look good? what type should i get if any?

Hello,
I am Black and I have permed hair.I want easy, manageable hair just to run out the house without worrying how my hair looks. So, I was thinkin about curls;I don't know what type of curls I want but something that would suit my fine hair texture and bring out my face--Just a natural look.
Is it possible for Black-permed hair?

Hi! I have shoulder tip length hair that's normal-dry,light brown, flat beyond belief and really thin. I've been trying to give it more volume but nothing seems to work. Would a perm make my hair fuller or make it break and fall out? I did research and some people say that hair can fall out. Please help! Thank you :)

I have never had a perm, and want to know if it'd work on me. I have really thick, straight/wavyish hair. But it's not the kind of wavy that looks pretty on it's own... just 'messy' and frizzy. This is because the underneath part of my hair is curlier and the top has just a slight wave...so combined it doesn't look good unless I go to bed with wet hair in a braid, or straighten it everyday. I was thinking maybe I could get a perm, and have hair that would just dry curly and be pretty by itself with little maintencne...especially since summer is coming and ill be at the beach a lot. but there are so many kinds of perms... what kind would be good for me and my hair type? I don't want a big poofy head of hair. also, idk what size rods i should ask for. i dont want a fro or a really tight perm. help?

I'm 19 years old and have never had a perm in my life. I have medium length brown hair that is very thick. I would really like to get a spiral perm in my hair but i don't know if this would be a bad idea. I want more than just a wave I would like to have actual curls in my hair. Any suggestions? thanks

I am a cosmetology Instructor & have taught for many years. My suggestion to everyone is to go to a professional to have a perm done. There are alot of things you need to know to get a good perm. If it's not done correctly you could end up with a frizzy mess & a lot of breakage. If you have had other chemical services prior to having a perm be honest with your stylist. Even if you bleached your hair & then colored over it, they need to know that or you could end up with no hair. It's so important to tell them what you've done & what you used & when you did it.

This is because the underneath part of my hair is curlier and the top has just a slight wave...so combined it doesn't look good unless I go to bed with wet hair in a braid, or blowdry it straight. However, with a baby on the way and a toddler at home, I never seem to do either of these because I don't have time... so my hair is always in a ponytail. Hi to all, i am a hairdresser have been for thirteen years and if you ladies want abit of honest advice and knowledge on perms here it is they break the bonds that make up your hair and force your hair to take up a new structure , neutralising one correctly is so important as your hair is locked into place and all chemical processing comes to a halt thus your hair taking up its new curl. My point is all perms will make your hair feel different for examples if your hair already fells dry it will be more so after , if your hair is heavy you will need to make it lighter first so you get the most from your perm i.e. layers .
Best advice i can give is to go to a top salon i.e a Rush or Regis headmasters
Pay for the busiest or top stylist
(remember there busy or at the top for a reason)
Don't mean to be sexest but preferably a female hairdresser as we have nearly all had a perm at one point, how many men have
and after having one invest in some good products i.e shampoo and conditioners oh and some good styling products cheap one can spoil your perm ask your stylist.
Hope this helps
good luck

I have very fine, wavy hair. I wanted to get a straight perm. People have told me that by getting a straight perm on fine hair, it will make my hair frizzy. Is that true?

Hello. I have extremely thick medium length hair. It's naturally straight and refuses to curl via curling iron. I've never had a perm nor colored my hair before. I was wondering what type of perm to get, and who you recommend? I like the loose, bigger curls look. Thanks.
