Hair Perm Techniques

Perm works by breaking down inner structures in your hair and reforming them around a curler to give a new shape. Hair should be washed prior to perming as this causes the scales on the cuticles to rise gently, allowing the perming lotion to enter the hair shaft more quickly. The perming lotion alters the Kertin and breaks down the sulphur bonds that link the fibre like cells together in the inner layers of each hair. When these fibres have become loose, they can be formed into a new shape, when the hair is stretched over a curler or a perming rod.

Once the curlers or rods are in place, more lotion is applied and the perm is left to develop to fix the new shape. The development time can vary according to the condition and texture of the hair. When the development is complete, the changed links in the hair are re-formed into their new shape by the application of a second chemical known as the neutralizer. The neutralizer contains an oxidizing agent that is effectively responsible for closing up the broken links and producing the wave or curl permanently.

The type of curl that is produced depends on a number of factors. The size of the curler is perhaps the most important as this determines the size of the curl. Generally speaking the smaller the curler the smaller and therefore tighter the curl, whereas medium to large curlers tends to give a much looser effect. The strength of lotion used can also make a difference, as can the texture and type of hair. Hair in good condition takes a perm much better than hair in poor condition and fine hair curls more easily than coarse hair.

After a perm it takes 48 hours for the keratin in the hair to harden naturally. During this time the hair is vulnerable to damage and must be treated with care. Resist shampooing, brushing, vigorous combing, blow drying or set ting, any of which may cause the perm to drop.

Once hair has been permed it remains curly and shaped the way it has been formed, although new growth will be straight. As time goes by the curl can soften and if the hair is long its weight may make the curl and the wave appear much looser.

I am an african american woman with naturally curly hair. I have been getting relaxers for the last 13 years because my mother said my hair was getting unmanagable, and now I miss my curls! I was wondering how I would go about stopping the relaxers and starting to get rod perms, to bring my curls back. What should I use, what should I do, And will it work? Please help

Rod to Roller Perm

A: In many salons, this technique is referred to as a “Transfer Perm”. While it may sound very complicated, the process is actually simple, just a little more time consuming than a traditional perm service.

The hair is wrapped on perm rods small enough to give a broken down wave pattern and the waving solution is applied and processed according to the perm formula used. After the waving lotion is rinsed from the hair, carefully unwind the hair from the perm rods and rewrap it on rollers that are the size of the curl you desire for the finished style.

As a rule of thumb, use one roller for every two rods you remove. The rods should be sufficiently small that the 2:1 ratio in the transfer from rod to roller should not overload the roller. Once the hair has been rewrapped on the rollers, apply the neutralizer to the hair and process that stage as directed according to the perm formula you use.

After the neutralizer has been processed, you should rinse the hair as directed. Be careful since most rollers don’t hold as securely as perm rods during rinsing. This means using a low-pressure flow of water over the rollers and potentially a longer rinsing time. In addition, many stylists prefer to follow the pat-dry stage with air-drying under a hooded dryer using low or no heat. Doing this give the long lasting benefits of a wet-set to the finished style (and since oxygen from the air helps to further ensure complete neutralization of the perm it can grant longer lasting results) but is not necessary.

It should be specifically stated that using this perming technique is not appropriate for those individuals who have over-stressed, fragile or damaged hair. When the hair is in the transfer stage it will be at its most vulnerable and must be treated with extreme care. A stylist who is contemplating using this technique on any client must use his or her best judgment and should always err on the side of caution.

does anyone have the instructions on the technique for rod to roller perms, they had them back in the late 80's. My hair is thin and that was the only perm that worked on my hair, it did not friz and the perm was nice and soft with onlu body. My Beautician has never heard of this perm. I think my old beautician used a very good perm on my hair so it would not damange it. Maybe an acid perm??? If I can get the instructions I can relay to my hairdresser. Please help!! Thanks Pat

For Honey: Not a good idea to follow a "sodium" relaxer with a thio perm. I would recommend the soft curl permanent wave (curl reform) only.
Danna: If you absolutely have to perm now, search for the most mild "true acid" perm you can find. True acid means that the pH of the perm is less than 7.0, many "acid balanced" perms actually have a pH on the alkaline side of the pH scale. This high pH will certainly damage your hair. If you need any more information post again. Hope it helps.

For denise; READ the Manufacturers directions on the perm box.
For Kay; you need to use clairifying shampoo to get any dirt and debri out of hair which can cause the perm not to take. You can apply conditioner after the perm, before might block the solution from taking.
For Dana; yes you can get a perm after having it relaxed. you could have had it done at the same time, aka a curl reformation. you'd probably have to go with an Acid perm. It's gentler on your hair.
For savitri; You can basically section the hair any way you want the perm to turn out in the end, and depending on the style you want. The most common is one row down the center from forehead to nape, then two rows on each side curving toward nape. it looks like two'C's on each side, one in front and behind the ear.
