Curling Iron Technique
Implements
Thermal curling iron styling requires the use of three implements in addition to the regular styling tools: metal comb, hair dryer and curling iron. 1. Metal comb are preferred because they can withstand and retain heat. 2. The hair dryer is used to prepare the shampooed hair for styling and, in conjunction with a styling brush or comb, can help from the base design of a style very quickly. Curling irons and combs are then used to complete the style. 3. The curling irons must be made to hold an even temperature. The curling or styling portion of the iron is composed of two parts: the rod (prong), and the shell (groove or bowl). The rod is solid steel and perfect round. The shell also is perfectly round, with the inside grooved so that the rod can rest in it when the irons are closed.
Heat Testing Before Applying
Always heat test the irons before applying them to the hair. Clamp the heated iron over a tissue neck strip and hold it for five seconds. If the paper scorches or turns brown, the iron is too hot. Decrease the temperature before using. It should be noted that fine, lightened, or badly damaged hair can withstand less heat than normal hair. Use pressing cream or oil on African-American black hair to help prevent breakage or scorching.
Removing the Curl from the Iron
During the curling process the comb is used to protect the scalp from possible burns.
When the curl is formed and the ends are freed from between the rod and the shell, one complete revolution of the iron is made inside the curl. This final revolution is made to smooth the ends and to loosen the hair from the iron. The comb is then used in conjunction with the iron to remove the curl. The iron is drawn in one direction while the comb holds the curl steady and slowly and carefully draws it in the opposite direction. Thus the curl is removed from the iron.
Volume Curls
To create volume or lift hair style, we need to volume curls. The degree of life desired will determine the type of volume curls being used.
Volume Base Curls - developed to provide maximum lift or volume since the curl is placed very high on its base.
Full Base Curls - designed to provide strong curls with full lift.
Half Base Curls - designed to provide strong curls with moderate lift.
Off Base Curls - designed to provide strong curls with only slight lift.
Finished Curl Settings
For best results when giving a thermal setting, clip each curl in place until the whole head is complete and ready for styling.
After Curl or Wave
Brush the hair working up from the neckline; push the waves and curls into place as you progress over the entire head. If the hairstyle is to be finished with curls, do the bottom curls last.
Finger Waving
Finger waving is the technique of creating hairstyles with the aid of the fingers, comb, waving or styling lotion or get, hairpins or clips, and a styling hair net.
The best results in developing soft, natural waves are obtained in hair that either has a natural or permanent wave. It is more difficult to properly finger wave straight hair. A finger wave should harmonize with the shape of the head, as well as with facial features.
Styling Lotion and Comb
The use of a good styling lotion makes the hair pliable and keeps it in place. The proper choice of styling lotion or gel should be governed by the texture and condition of the hair. A good styling lotion is harmless to the hair; it should not flake after it has dried.
